Preface, Explanations

Cincinnati

Cincinnati was laid out in the year 1789, in a wilderness and contained in 1795, 500 inhabitants; in 1800, 750 inhabitants; in 1805, 960 inhabitants; in 1810, 2000 inhabitants; in 1813, 4000 inhabitants; in1819, 10,000 inhabitants; and in 1824, 12,000 inhabitants. It was incorporated into a city in 1819 and divided into four wards by two straight lines, crossing each other at right angles, and running through, and parallel with Main and Third streets. The compact part of the city is within a space of about one mile square. Opposite the city on the Kentucky side of the river, stand New Port and Covington, which are handsome villages, and some day hence, will probably be considered but an extension of this city, if we may indulge the idea, that the time is not far distant, when a bridge will connect the States of Ohio and Kentucky at this place.

Preface

It was the intention, at the time when the prospectus of this work issued, to give the amount of manufactories of the city, for the past years; but after some considerable pains were taken to procure the same, it was found the the toal amount could not be given with any degree of accuracy, therefore the undertaking was finally abandoned. The addition of the places of nativity, may be thought by some to be useless, and by other improper, but of the latter in particular; the number is very small. If it answers no valuable purpose it may serve at least as a gratification to the curious. The names have been inserted of all white male citizens, that were over twenty-one years of age, and of all females who were at the head of families that could be found; yet I am well aware, that some few men, {those who were not at the head of a family in particular} have escaped my search.

The chronological table has been arranged with great care and attention, and I trust will be found correct.
