Archbishop Moeller Plans Million-Dollar Seminary
In September, 1922, the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Cincinnati archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church is to be celebrated in an appropriate manner, but Archbishop Henry Moeller hopes to perpetuate the occasion through the dedication at that time of Mt. St. Mary's Theological Seminary, which is to be erected at the southeast corner of Moeller and Quatman avenues, Norwood Heights.
During the next week preliminary steps toward the construction of the Immense project, as shown in the above perspective, may be taken for Anthony Kunz, Cincinnati and Howard W. Germann, Dayton, Ohio associated architects will receive estimates until May 3 on excavating and grading of the site.
The improvement, it is said, is to cost approximately $1,000,000.
From indications it will take almost two years to complete the project, but it is the hope of the Archbishop and his associates to complete sufficient of the improvement to have the celebration of its founding form a part of the exercises of September of next year.
The building is part of the architectural scheme laid out for the development of the diocesan center in the upper end of Norwood when the plan was launched some years ago. It is in keeping with the home of the Archbishop, which is shown to the right of the illustration.
The structure is planned to accommodate 200 students who finish their last two or three years in theology before being ordained to the priesthood, each of whom is to have a separate room.
Because of the character of the structure it has been designed for permanence, being of fireproof construction, the foundations being of concrete or stone masonry, while the exterior walls will be of pressed brick, with stone trimmings, the buildings being of three or four stories.
The improvement is to cover a space of 354 feet in width on Moeller avenue by a depth of 258 feet, with two inner courts, the chapel dividing the two courts. Extending back of and separate from the main building will be a gymnasium on one side and a boiler house, with a laundry, on the opposite side.
There will be 10 suites of rooms for the faculty, in addition to one for the President of the seminary.
The chapel sanctuary is to contain 144 choir stalls and adjacent thereto seating capacity for 80 persons.
In the group will be three classrooms, an assembly room for 150 students, a library, the dimensions being 38 x 80 feet, and music and recreation rooms for students and the faculty.
